About the Challenge

The Waverley Innovation Challenge asked innovators to create a mobile app for customers in the Waverley Local Government Area (LGA) that gives greater access to transport options including shared mobility services.

The challenge provided finalists the unique opportunity to create a mobile app or other digital product which can integrate defined pick-up and drop-off zones (PUDO’s) so customers in the Waverley area can seamlessly plan and access a wide range of transport options. Finalists chosen to be part of our incubation program received support to integrate and share their data via the TfNSW Open Data Hub, and special access to transport subject matter experts from both Waverley Council and TfNSW.

After careful consideration, Swiftfare and Moovit were chosen to progress to 12 month trials of their solutions for 12 months.

Moovit is a native multi-modal trip planner application (iPhone & Android) and web application with PUDO bays integrated.

Moovit provides users with real-time information and fastest routes for the public transport network. Users can send live reports about their travel experience, such as cleanliness and seat availability, through the app. This live information helps improve route plans and provides other users with more accurate travel time estimates. Developed by Moovit.

The app also features a data visualisation dashboard.

Wave by Swiftfare is a multi-modal trip planning app for both iPhone and Android that incorporates gamification to change consumer behaviour, with a goal of increasing the utilisation of designated PUDO Bays in Waverley along with promotion of local businesses.

The app features Point of Interest (POI) discovery features, and allows users can earn points and see leaderboards to compare socially with friends. It also supports the integration of P2P operators.

Further Information

MaaS is a dynamic, growing market with small and large transport options working together.  It is a service that sits between customers and their mobility options with the goal of enabling seamless travel. It is one of the strategies to reduce road congestion by cutting down private car single person usage by providing more convenient mobility options that customers want.

  3. Encourage the use of designated safe pick-up/drop-off zones.

  4. Enable multimodal trip planning that will increase transport options for customers.

  5. Integrate both public transport and privately owned shared transport service providers in a customer facing digital product.

  6. Share data and insights to assist with analysis and future planning.

  7. Identify safe and continuous routes for prams, wheelchairs and children on bicycles.

  8. Identify a range of journey options for a defined trip that includes total journey route, cost and time.
